A Moment in Time was adapted from the HE Bates story of the same name by Robin Chapman. Allison Elliot played the main female lead Elizabeth whereas Robin Davies played her love interest Splodge a Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot.
The plot plays much like any other classic war time romance, where Elizabeth's life and her love is caught up the turmoil of World War II. Splodge is a RAF pilot and Elizabeth does not hesitate to break conventions for the man she loves. Though there are other sub-plots with Catharine, Bill, Tom and Harry played respectively by Jill Balcon, John Moulder-Brown, Michael Troughton and Benjamin Whitrow, the focus remains on the Elizabeth-Splodge romance. Apart from the overwhelming emotional appeal, the series also brilliantly portrayed the circumstances during World War II and what is known as the famous 'Battle of Britain'. Not only did it show the war struck life of the civilians but also difficulties of people to understand the war fought by the pilots as till now they had only been accustomed to reports of trench warfare.
A Moment in Time was produced by Collin Tucker as a four part series and acclaimed as a powerful BBC dramatic production. Though released in 1979 the solid direction of Renny Rye ensured the actors spun a convincing picture of a late thirties Britain struggling to come to terms with open warfare over British soil.
