A TV Dante (1989) DVD

A TV Dante is an interesting foray from critically acclaimed collaboration from director Peter Greenaway and painter/polymath Tom Phillips. An experimental offering attempting to create a visual impression of Dante's Inferno. The series broadcast in 1989 and featured the first eight Cantos of the poem, personally translated by Peter Greenaway. Bob Peck plays Dante, John Gielgud as Virgil and Muse Beatrice is played by Joanne Walley.

Inferno is the first stage of the three stages in Divine Comedy which shows how Dante guided by Virgil and inspired by his Muse Beatrice goes through the purgatory hell fire to reach Paradise. Inferno is the depiction of hell and the various punishments and tortures that one faces there. It is interesting to note here that the though Dante's perception of hell was relevant in its contemporary society, the description of the various sins have a more universal nature.

A TV Dante was unique in impressive and unconventional imagery presenting a multi-layered and illuminated dramatisation. Faces of various characters are juxtaposed with images of the various places and animals mentioned by Dante, while a wandering narration retells the tale as occasional footnotes appear with additional comments and clarification. A TV Dante was eight episodes long with total runtime of 88 minutes.
