Armchair Thriller - Dying Day (1980) DVD
Dying Day was the third mini-series of Armchair Thriller Series 2. Antony Skipling - a lonely, meticulous man - encounters a strange character on an evening train, who plays him various recordings of "badgers farting" and insects pupating. When the recordist accidentally leaves one of his tapes behind, Skipling plays the cassette and overhears a plot detailing his own murder. When the man on the train is subsequently killed, Skipling teams up with his old counselor to try and locate the voice on the tape... but as everyone points out, who on earth would want to kill Antony Skipling? Convinced of his own impending death however, he seemingly uncovers a sinister plot involving a strange, Howard Hughes-like recluse.
Dying Day Episode Guide
- Mr Skipling is Sentenced to Death: Anthony Skipling meets eccentric naturalist Foster on a train. Foster apparently forgets one of his tape-recordings behind. But when Skipling plays it, it reveals a different story
- Mr Skipling Finds a Friend: When Mr Skipling goes to the police, they won't believe him, so he turns to the Samaritans for help.
- Mr Skipling Fights Back: Mr Skipling asks his ex-wife for help. He learns that she is now "married" to an eccentric millionaire, with a voice just like the one heard on the tape. In his search for the truth he is befriended by Susie, who used to council him at the Samaritans when his wife left him.
- Mr Skipling's Day of Reckoning: The day on which Mr Skipling is to die, according to Foster's tape, arrives. He eventually tries to behave as if everything is going as normal, but when presented with Doris' "husband" at a train platform he lashes out and accidentally knocks him into the path of an oncoming train. Mr Skipling is sent to Broadmoor for murder, while Doris, her chauffeur and Susie celebrate the success of their plan. They have framed Mr Skipling and will inherit a vast fortune.
